On SNL, 50 Shades star Dakota Johnson faces the awkwardness of being Dakota Johnson

The awkwardness of “Fifty Shades of Grey” on a scale of 1 to 10:
1: Catching a “Fifty Shades of Grey” commercial while alone on your couch.
10: Discussing “Fifty Shades of Grey” with your mother. Or maybe your boyfriend’s mother.
Somewhere close to 10: The way Dakota Johnson must feel all the time.
The movie’s star hosted “Saturday Night Live” this week, and nearly all her jokes were about how uncomfortable it is to be the face of the sexual pop culture phenomenon that topped box office charts and inspired far too many think–pieces.
“My dog walker gives me a little wink every time he takes the leash off the wall,” Johnson cracked in her opening monologue.
You could feel the theme coming when her very first joke was about the nothing-subject we all turn to in awkward moments, the weather.
“New York is so beautiful this time of year,” she said. “Just kidding”

The highlight of the night came when Johnson shared just how special the SNL stage is to her parents, actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. (They were in the audience.)

And exactly nine months later, I was born. So I must have been conceived that night, after the show or maybe even during the show.”
The rest of the night, Johnson mostly contributed to skits alongside other cast members, who covered a broad range of this week’s news topics, from Net neutrality to emoji skin tones to the color #TheDress. Plus, a spoof skit about the Islamic State extremist group…
…that was quick to offend.
#SNL skit with Dakota Johnson on "It's just ISIS" -- not effin' funny! They're chopping peoples' head off and you're making it a joke?
— Diane Williams (@dianewms) March 1, 2015SNL ISIS skit was not funny & makes light of the horror of the genocidal actions of these Extremist Islamist murderers. How is that a joke?
— Steven Bucci (@SBucci) March 1, 2015Yo, Lorne Michaels...4 Isis references and it's only Update time? Wow. We wanted edgy, not offensive. Not a funny topic. #SNL #TooFar
