Yesterday, Juneteenth was declared a national holiday in the United States for the second year in a row.

The 95-year-old married her soulmate, Dale Lee, over five decades ago, while she was a teacher at McCoy Elementary. Her husband just happened to be the principal at Morningside Elementary at the time.

Interestingly to date, her biological children are not known in the public eye. Probably she kept them from the media for personal and security reasons.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of 95-year-old Opal Lee, who played a crucial role in putting pressure on legislators to recognize one of the significant days that Black Americans have celebrated for generations.

Lee began marching 2.5 miles for freedom nearly a half-decade earlier, in honor of Juneteenth and the enslaved Black people of Galveston, Texas, who didn’t know enslavement had ended until two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
